Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a history of over 3500 years. It includes Acupuncture, Massage, Moxibustion, Exercise, Diet Therapy, and Chinese Herbal Medicine. These therapies promote the body's natural ability to heal. The TCM modality of Medicine focuses not only on the symptoms of the disease, but also treats the cause of the disease in order to restore balance in the body. Often disease and imbalance result from deficiency of Qi (chee) or stagnation of flow of Qi and Blood. Qi is the energy which flows in pathways called meridians, which are related to internal organs and their physiological systems. These pathways communicate with the surface of the body at specific tender locations called acupuncture points. Each point has a predictable effect upon the vital energy passing through it. Tongue and pulse diagnoses are used to determine the flow in the meridians. Together with information from the interview, palpation and observation, the patient's condition can be formulated into a TCM diagnosis and an appropriate TCM treatment protocol is selected. In TCM, there is not a one treatment-protocol for a given condition. The same pathological condition may be treated differently in individuals, and different pathologies may be approached using the same treatment protocol. The key to choosing the treatment for the condition lies in the presentation of signs and symptoms the patient exhibits. This treatment strategy produces the most effective results for the patient.
